Why Mock Calls Matter
Practice the Call Before It's Real
The gap between knowing your script and confidently delivering it live is closed through repetition. Mock calls — role-played with your coach, a peer, or even recorded solo — build the muscle memory that makes real discovery calls feel natural instead of nerve-wracking.
The Practice Principle
"Confidence on a real call isn't a personality trait — it's a rehearsal outcome. The freelancers who sound calm and in control on discovery calls have simply practiced difficult moments enough times that nothing catches them off guard."
How to Run a Mock Call Session
The 30-Minute Practice Format
- 15 min — Setup: Your coach or practice partner picks one persona below (or invents a similar one) and stays fully in character.
- 215-20 min — Full Role-Play: Run the ENTIRE discovery call structure from the Client Call Guide — opening, 8 diagnostic questions, reflection, and close. Do not break character or pause to correct mistakes mid-call.
- 35-10 min — Debrief: Use the Feedback Rubric below immediately after. Note 1-2 specific things that went well and 1-2 specific things to improve next time.
Recommended Frequency
Run at least 1 mock call per week during active client-getting periods. Rotate through different personas so you build comfort handling every type of prospect personality — not just the easy ones.
Practice Personas
4 Prospect Personalities to Role-Play
Have your practice partner fully embody one of these personas during the mock call — including their tone, hesitations, and objections.
The Skeptic
Guarded, has been burned before, questions everything
"Honestly, I've worked with 2 bookkeepers before and both were a disaster. What makes you different?"
Practice goal: Stay calm, don't get defensive, acknowledge their past experience genuinely, and let your process (not your promises) do the convincing.
The Budget-Conscious Founder
Interested but hyper-focused on price, compares everything
"I saw someone on Upwork offering bookkeeping for $200/month. Why should I pay more than double that?"
Practice goal: Reframe around value and outcome without sounding defensive about your pricing. Practice the "Investment Frame" from the Pricing Psychology Guide out loud.
The Indecisive Overthinker
Agrees with everything but won't commit to next steps
"This all sounds great... I just need to think about it and maybe talk to a few other people first."
Practice goal: Don't panic or over-push. Practice naming the hesitation directly and calmly: "Totally understand — is there anything specific on your mind I could help clarify right now?"
The Eager Fast-Mover
Ready to sign immediately, wants to skip steps
"This sounds perfect — can we just start today? I don't really need the whole discovery process."
Practice goal: Stay warm but hold your process. Practice saying: "I love the enthusiasm! I still want to make sure I fully understand your books first so I can set us both up for success — let's finish a few quick questions."
Self & Coach Evaluation
Mock Call Feedback Rubric
| Skill Area | What to Rate (1-5) | What "5" Sounds Like |
|---|---|---|
| Opening & Agenda Setting | Clarity & confidence | Sets expectations in under 30 seconds, sounds warm and organized |
| Listening Ratio | Talk vs. listen balance | Talks roughly 20%, lets prospect speak 80% of the time |
| Question Quality | Depth of follow-ups | Asks natural follow-up questions based on actual answers, not just reading a script |
| Objection Handling | Composure under pressure | Never sounds defensive, acknowledges concern before responding |
| Tone & Pacing | Calm, unhurried energy | No filler words, comfortable with silence, doesn't rush to fill pauses |
| Closing the Call | Clarity of next steps | Ends with a specific, time-bound commitment — never vague |
After Every Mock Call
Write down ONE sentence you said that felt strong, and ONE moment where you hesitated or lost confidence. Review these notes before your next mock call — this is how real improvement compounds over just a few weeks.
